Leonardo da Vinci painted the Last Supper in the canteen
of the monastery of S.Maria delle Grazie, in the center
of Milan. The Last Supper had a tremendous impact on the
western art, for its dramatic force and for the beauty of
its colours and nuances. Instead of painting the bread offering
like the artists before him, Leonardo chooses the instant
when Jesus tells the Apostles that one of them is a traitor.
This way he can make a psychological portrait of the different
reactions of everyone around the table. Jesus is alone,
everyone is just trying to defend himself, you can nearly
see the cross slowly rising behind him.
Today you can admire the Last Supper after a 20 years restoration,
more beautiful and impressive than ever.
Be careful to book in advance, because access to the artwork
is strictly regulated. You can book online on the Last Supper
official website, www.cenacolovinciano.org
Do not miss the splendid church of S.Maria delle Grazie,
just aside The Last Supper, deeply renovated by one of the
best Renaissance architects, Bramante.
To stay in Leonardo’s folklore, you can have a meal
at the nearby Restaurant “Gli Orti di Leonardo”,
Via dei Togni 6, built on a terrain which is said to be
once owned by Leonardo himself.
